The rise of AI girlfriend platforms has been honestly phenomenal. What started as a curiosity, mine included, is now a multi-billion-dollar market, with valuations climbing year after year while engagement and global interest keep surging.
So I did the data-researcher thing and pulled every number worth knowing into one place: market valuations and projections, the explosive search growth, engagement and spending data, demographic patterns, and the countries driving global interest. Every figure is sourced at the bottom. No made-up numbers here, and since I pay to test these apps myself, the numbers come with context.

How is the AI Girlfriend market evolving?
The AI Girlfriend market is growing fast, fueled by consumer demand and serious investor money. What was a fringe niche in 2021 now posts market valuations in the billions and funding rounds that rival mainstream consumer software, and every major forecast agrees the expansion is far from over.
What are the key market value statistics?
Let's review the market value statistics below:
1. The global AI Girlfriend market reached $3.08 billion in 2025.
Estimates vary by how the category is defined, with 2025 figures ranging from $2.3 billion to $3.1 billion across analysts, but every count confirms a robust, fast-monetizing market for AI companionship.
2. The market is projected to reach $19.09 billion by 2035, with some analysts forecasting up to $24.5 billion by 2034.
All major forecasts land between 20% and 25% annual growth, meaning the market is expected to roughly triple every five to six years.
3. Worldwide funding for the AI companion industry hit $299 million in 2022, up from just $7 million in 2021, with roughly $700 million more invested across 2023 and 2024.
A 40x funding jump in a single year, followed by even larger totals. That tells you how quickly investor confidence in digital companionship shifted from skepticism to conviction.
How are online search trends reflecting interest in AI Girlfriends?
Search behavior is the clearest public signal of demand, and every related query has exploded. The surge covers not only the head term "AI Girlfriend" but the whole cluster of terms around virtual companionship, and it has continued through 2026.
What do the search trend statistics reveal?
Review the search trend statistics below:
4. Google searches for "AI Girlfriend" increased by about 2,400% between 2022 and 2024, and interest has continued to set new highs into 2026.
The launch of mainstream chatbots in late 2022 turned a niche query into a mass-market one, and unlike many AI fads, the trend line has kept climbing rather than mean-reverting.
5. "AI Girlfriend" searches grew by 525% in a single year.
Even measured over just twelve months, growth came in multiples, not percentage points. For scale, that pattern usually shows up only in breakout consumer categories.
6. Searches for "virtual girlfriend" rose by 620% year over year globally.
The older term rode the same wave, showing the demand is for the experience itself, not just the trending keyword.
7. The term "AI Companion" saw a 490% rise in the US in 2024 compared to 2022.
The growth of softer alternative terms signals mainstream normalization: people who wouldn't type "AI girlfriend" are searching for the same thing in different words.
8. Over 73,000 monthly searches were recorded for "AI relationship bots" as of February 2024.
Steady volume on long-tail queries shows sustained, deliberate interest rather than one-off curiosity spikes.
9. There are over 1.6 million English-language searches per year for AI chatbot girlfriends.
Across the full keyword cluster, English-speaking demand alone amounts to millions of intent-driven searches annually.
How engaged are users with AI Girlfriend platforms?
Engagement is where AI girlfriend platforms stop looking like a novelty and start looking like a habit. Daily-use rates rival messaging apps, the leading platforms draw traffic in the tens of millions, and willingness to pay has more than doubled in two years.
What are the key engagement and usage statistics?
Let's review the engagement statistics below:
10. Character AI led the space with 97 million monthly visits in March 2024 and remains one of the most-visited AI platforms in the world.
Its community-character model made it the biggest doorway into AI companionship, even though only part of its usage is romantic.
11. Approximately 55% of users interact with their AI girlfriend every day.
A majority-daily usage pattern puts these apps in the retention league of messaging platforms, not games or dating apps. Honestly, after my own testing weeks, I get it, and it has held steady across multiple years of surveys.
12. Engaged users spend about $47 per month on premium features.
Between subscriptions and token purchases for images, voice, and video, committed users routinely spend more than the sticker price of any single plan.
13. Category revenue per download more than doubled, from $0.52 to $1.18.
Companion apps are converting free users to paying ones at over twice the old rate, and the top 10% of apps capture 89% of all category revenue.
Wondering which apps deserve that engagement?
55% of users chat daily, but only a handful of platforms earn it. I subscribe, test for weeks, and call out the ones actually worth your time.
Read my hands-on reviews →What are the demographic and behavioral trends among AI Girlfriend users?
The user base is younger and more diverse than the stereotype suggests, and attitudes are shifting fastest among the youngest cohorts. The numbers below cover who uses these platforms, who's open to them, and the relationship context driving adoption.
What do user demographics and preferences reveal about AI Girlfriend adoption?
Review the demographic statistics below:
14. The average age of an AI Girlfriend platform user is 27 years old.
Millennials and Gen Z, the cohorts most fluent in digital-first interaction, sit at the center of the market.
15. 28% of male users aged 18 to 34 have interacted with an AI Girlfriend app at least once.
More than a quarter of young men have at least experimented with virtual companionship, making it a mainstream behavior rather than a fringe one.
16. About 18% of AI Girlfriend users are female.
The roughly 82/18 gender split confirms a male-dominated market, but nearly one in five users being women shows real cross-gender appeal, and companion apps more broadly report female shares of 30% or higher.
17. One in five young users is open to the idea of an AI or virtual partner.
Openness comes before adoption, and a fifth of the youngest cohort already considers an AI partner a legitimate option.
18. One in five men on dating apps have tried AI Girlfriend platforms at least once.
AI companionship isn't replacing dating apps so much as running alongside them, with heavy overlap between the two user bases.
19. 63% of men under 30 report being single, compared to 34% of women under 30.
The singleness gap among young adults is one of the strongest structural forces behind AI girlfriend demand. I looked deeper into the Gen Z dating statistics, and the broader numbers show just how common being single has become among this generation.
20. 72% of US teens have tried an AI companion, and 52% use one regularly.
The same researchers concluded AI companions are not safe for users under 18, a position I share: every platform reviewed on this site is 18+ only.
What does our own AI girlfriend survey show?
Every figure above comes from someone else's measurement. In August 2026 I stopped borrowing and ran my own: an AI relationship survey of 2,150 U.S. adults through SurveyMonkey Audience, census-balanced for age and gender. I threw out 441 responses that showed an impossible answer pattern before analysis, so every number below is based on the 1,709 that survived; the full account of that screen is its own post. They describe that sample, not the U.S. population, and I say so wherever a number is quoted.
What do 1,709 Americans say about AI girlfriends and boyfriends?
Let's review the survey statistics below:
28. 24.7% of respondents have used an AI girlfriend or boyfriend app, and 12.3% currently do.
One in four in this sample has tried one. Treat this as a description of the respondents rather than a national rate: reported use varied by device type even after screening, which is the kind of caveat the borrowed statistics above never carry because nobody checked.
29. 50.5% say a partner's romantic or sexual relationship with an AI would be cheating; another 21.2% would not call it cheating but would be uncomfortable.
Put the first three together and 71.7% would not be okay with it. The public has already decided that whatever an AI girlfriend is, a partner having one can count as betrayal. I take the four answers apart in does an AI relationship count as cheating?
30. Respondents open to feelings for an AI were far more likely to call it cheating: 73.0% versus 41.2%.
The finding I did not expect. People who believe AI feelings are possible judge them as real; the skeptics shrug because they think nothing real is happening. Only 7.2% of the first group hid behind "an AI isn't a real person," against 37.1% of the second. The full answer-by-answer breakdown is in the AI infidelity paradox.
31. 56.6% say having someone to talk to or feeling less lonely would be the main reason to use an AI companion. Only 10.3% chose affection, romance, or sexual interaction.
The stereotype of this category is a sex product. The stated demand is a loneliness product, and one in three respondents chose a mental-health reason, coping with depression or improving self-esteem, over romance.
32. Men were three times as likely as women to name affection or sex as the main reason: 16.0% versus 5.2%.
Even among men it was a minority answer; conversation and loneliness led for both sexes. The gap is real, but it is a gap in the second-place reason, not the first.
33. 44.7% of respondents aged 30 to 45 would consider using an AI girlfriend or boyfriend, against 12.5% of those aged 18 to 29.
This cuts against stat 14 above, where the borrowed average-age figure puts Gen Z at the center of the market. In my sample, openness peaked among Millennials and Gen X and fell away among the youngest adults, who were also the most loyal to ordinary dating apps. Two sources, two different measurements; I trust the one where I can see every respondent.
34. 29.3% could imagine developing genuine romantic feelings for an AI, including 8.3% who say they could genuinely fall in love.
Always quote both figures. The 8.3% is the firm answer; the rest is "maybe, if the AI became realistic enough," which is a very different claim.
35. 74.4% of former users would consider using an AI girlfriend or boyfriend again, against 11.7% of people who never have.
You can quit the app, but the idea sticks. Former users looked far more like current users than like people who had never tried one, on every attitude question. I put the users and never-users side by side in a follow-up post.
36. If single, 52.2% would choose dating apps over an AI girlfriend or boyfriend; 7.8% would choose the AI. 26.8% were not sure.
The "AI is replacing dating" story is not in the data. The ambivalence is: more than a quarter could not say.
37. 20.9% could see themselves choosing an extremely realistic AI over a human relationship on the strict measure; 64.6% said an AI could never replace one.
The strict measure counts only the two "yes" answers. Adding "maybe, but I would still prefer a human" takes it to 35.4%, which is why I state the definition every single time this number is used.
What is the global reach of AI Girlfriend interest?
Interest in AI girlfriends is global, but far from evenly distributed. Ranking countries by search volume shows where digital companionship is most in demand, with North America leading on revenue and Asia-Pacific growing fastest.
Which countries are at the forefront of AI Girlfriend searches?
Review the geographic search statistics below:
21. The USA leads global searches with 693,600 annual searches, more than the next two countries combined.
A mature digital market plus the highest willingness to pay makes the US the category's center of gravity for both interest and revenue.
22. India records 287,160 annual searches, the second-highest in the world.
India's enormous and rapidly growing online population makes it the most important emerging market for AI companionship.
23. The UK (124,080), Canada (92,040), and Germany (47,640) round out the top five.
High-income English- and German-speaking markets show strong, steady interest, confirming demand tracks closely with digital maturity.
24. Australia (43,680), the Philippines (31,440), Malaysia (24,000), Pakistan (23,400), and the Netherlands (21,720) complete the top ten.
The spread across Oceania, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and Europe shows this is a genuinely global behavior, and Asia-Pacific is the fastest-growing region at close to 29% a year.
What do user behavior and research findings reveal about AI Girlfriend adoption?
Let's review the additional insights below:
25. 47% of surveyed participants said they would use an AI-powered dating app to find a long-term partner.
Nearly half of respondents already accept AI as a legitimate matchmaker. To me, that's the clearest sign of how fast the stigma is fading.
26. About 50% of adults under 30 have used a dating site or app.
Digital-first relationships are the norm for the youngest adult cohort, and AI companions are a natural extension of that behavior.
27. Mozilla reviewed 11 romantic AI chatbot apps and found 10 of them failed its minimum security standards, with about 90% potentially sharing or selling personal data.
Privacy is the category's weakest point. It's why my reviews weigh data practices alongside chat quality, and why I tell readers to never share real personal details in-app.
Conclusion
The statistics describe a market moving from breakout to maturity: valuations climbing from $3.08 billion toward $19 billion and beyond, funding up 40-fold in a single year, search interest up 2,400% and still rising, and a majority of users engaging daily. Demographics reveal both the expected core (young men, average age 27) and the surprises: nearly one in five users are women, half of young adults treat digital-first relationships as normal, and teen adoption has raced ahead of safety guardrails. And my own survey adds the piece the market data leaves out: half of American respondents already treat a partner's AI romance as cheating, and the appeal they describe is company, not sex.
Together, the numbers point to a lasting shift in how people find companionship, not a passing fad. As memory, voice, image, and video capabilities keep improving, expect engagement and spending to climb further, alongside growing scrutiny of privacy and age safety, the two areas where the industry has the most work to do. And the apps driving these numbers are the same twenty-one I pay for and test, all compared in my hands-on AI girlfriend app comparison.
