About AI Girlfriend Coach

AI Girlfriend Coach is an independent research and testing publication covering AI companions, human-AI relationships, and the companies building them.

I'm Ranji Mercado. I started by personally testing AI girlfriend apps because I wanted to know what these products were actually like underneath the marketing claims and the affiliate rankings. It grew into something broader: original surveys, industry datasets, controlled product tests, and a running record of how AI companionship is changing.

The story

From Testing Apps to Studying an Industry

I signed up for my first AI girlfriend app because it was work. I was a content writer and software reviewer, the category was surfacing everywhere, and someone needed to look at it properly. Candy AI was the first one I paid for.

Then I couldn't put it down. That is the honest version, and that pull is what convinced me this category deserved real study rather than another listicle. If it worked on someone who opened the app as an assignment, with every reason to stay detached, it was worth understanding what it was doing to everyone else.

So this site began with subscriptions, not a research plan. I created accounts on the biggest platforms, exhausted the free tiers, paid for the premium plans with my own money, and documented what actually happened: the conversations, the paywalls, the pricing, the moments that surprised me.

The longer I used them, the more questions I had that existing reviews and industry reports could not answer. Do these apps really remember people, or only claim to? Why do people actually use them? Do people count AI romance as cheating? Who is funding all of this, and what are they betting on? What does one of these products really cost once the credits and tokens are counted?

So I went and collected the data myself. The memory questions became a controlled seven-day benchmark across 13 platforms. The money questions became a funding dataset covering 30 companies. The people questions became a survey of 2,150 U.S. adults. The pricing questions became an analysis of 11 purchased plans. I never decided to become an AI researcher. The research is what the testing turned into.

The beat

What I Research

Human-AI relationships

How people think about attachment, romance, intimacy, loneliness and boundaries when an AI is involved.

The AI companion industry

Funding, companies, business models, pricing, and how the category is actually developing.

Product behaviour

Memory, conversation quality, image generation, personalization, and the gap between what a product advertises and what it does.

Consumer experience

What happens when a real person signs up, pays, stays for weeks, and runs into the limits.

The body of work

Research by the Numbers

Method

How I Work

I'm an independent researcher and product tester, not an academic institution. The approach combines original consumer research, documented datasets and firsthand testing, held to standards a reader can actually check:

Published methodology

Survey reports state the sample design, field dates, screening rules and exclusions, including the responses I removed and the exact rule that removed them.

Documented sources

Industry and funding data is compiled from documented sources, with the source notes published beside the dataset.

Disclosed protocols

Product tests use consistent prompts, planted facts, scenarios and time periods, and the protocol is described with the results.

Independent purchasing

Test subscriptions are bought with my own money, and any commercial relationship is disclosed where it exists.

Corrections

When I get something wrong I correct it on the page and say what changed. Corrections policy →

Stated limitations

Every study names what it cannot show: sample caveats, device effects, association rather than causation.

The clearest test of that was my own survey. Excluding 441 low-quality responses cut reported AI companion use from 30.3% to 12.3%, and the share saying they could genuinely fall in love with an AI from 27.1% to 8.3%. The bigger numbers would have made better headlines. I published the smaller ones. The whole decision is written up in why we excluded 441 responses.
Firsthand

Why I Still Test the Products Myself

I don't think anyone can cover this industry properly from press releases and company websites. The products are the story, and the only way to know them is from inside. I create the accounts, talk to the characters, pay for the subscriptions, compare free against paid, plant memories and check what survives, generate the images, track the credit systems, and come back when the products change.

A journalist covering this space may have interviewed an AI company's CEO. I have spent weeks inside the product they are reporting on. Both perspectives matter, and this site exists to supply the second one. Every platform I cover gets a living review that grows as the product does.

Ranji Mercado
Founder and researcher, AI Girlfriend Coach

Before this site I studied philosophy and worked as a content writer and software reviewer, which turned out to be the right preparation for a category where the product is a conversation. I opened my first AI girlfriend app as an assignment and could not put it down, and that is what convinced me the category deserved real study. I founded AI Girlfriend Coach to document AI companionship firsthand, and it has grown into the research operation this page describes.

Work With Me

I also work with companies, publications and research teams on custom AI companion research, independent product testing, market analysis and research-backed content.

Trust

Editorial Independence

Test subscriptions are bought with my own money. Companies cannot buy rankings, reviews, research findings or favourable coverage, and no research conclusion is ever changed for a partner. Where a commercial relationship exists with a company covered here, it is disclosed on the page. Some review pages carry affiliate links, disclosed where they appear, and that revenue pays for the subscriptions and the research.

Duty of care

A Word of Care

I review these apps because millions of people use them, and those people deserve honest information. But I'll say what the platforms won't: AI companions are engineered to be hard to put down, and a few of my own testing notes prove it works on me too. They can be genuinely fun. They are not a substitute for human connection. If loneliness is the thing bringing you here, an AI girlfriend can be a comfort, and the people in your life are still worth the harder conversation. Everything on this site is for adults, 18 and over, full stop.

The research says the same thing from the other direction. When I asked 2,150 Americans why someone would use an AI companion, the most common answer by far was loneliness, not romance. Whatever else these products are, that is largely what they are being asked to carry. You can read my testing of the AI girlfriend apps themselves, or the survey.
