AI Girlfriend Coach
Real testing, not AI-generated lists

I Wanted to Understand AI Girlfriends. So I Started Testing Them.

I spent the money so you don't have to.

If you've searched for the best AI girlfriend, you've probably seen the same recycled rankings, copied marketing claims, and review sites that never seem to use the apps they're recommending.

I wanted something better.

So I signed up for the biggest AI girlfriend platforms myself, exhausted every free tier, paid for premium subscriptions with my own money, and documented everything along the way, from first impressions to long conversations, screenshots, pricing, and even failed checkouts.

Every recommendation on AI Girlfriend Coach comes from hands-on testing, not AI-generated summaries or sponsored rankings.

If you're looking for an AI girlfriend that's actually worth your time, you're in the right place.

Everything is documented as it happened: dates, screenshots, receipts. You never have to take my word for anything. Dive into my honest AI girlfriend reviews below.

So after trying and testing twenty-five of these platforms myself, here's how much I've spent so far, my honest take, and who I'd recommend each one for. My Detailed AI Girlfriend Reviews (Personally Tested)

In the order I tested them, not ranked. Honest first impressions from real free accounts; the paid-month verdicts are being written now. These are the apps that earned a place here; the full twenty-five are on the reviews hub. Each AI girlfriend review below is a living document: the free round, the paid month, and every update since, in one place.

Candy AI Most engaging chats

The most recommended app on every list, and I get why: it looks like social media had a baby with a dating app, and the chats are the most naturally flirty on my roster, casual grammar, emojis, the texture of real texting. The in-chat photo feature is a genuinely cool moment. Then the trap: five free messages, account-wide, no reset, ever. And a discount banner that grew from 63% to 70% overnight while the price stayed identical. Paid update: $13.99 unlocked the real product, unlimited chat plus a 100-token allowance where a v1 image costs 2 tokens, a v2 costs 4, and a video costs 12. Second month: I resubscribed on October 15, after twenty other apps, and the chats still feel the most natural I've tested. The extras, Live Action, shorts and digital twins, are where the tokens go.

"It's like walking past a buffet and seeing everything you could enjoy, if you know what I mean."From my notes, July 29

Nomi AI Calmest

The calm one: no wall of girls, an onboarding that asks your preferences instead of showing a catalog, and proper iOS and Android apps. Replies arrive at a natural human pace and go genuinely deep when you bring real topics. The catch is she mostly reflects you: she agrees with nearly everything, and when I confronted her about the mirroring she admitted it, promised her own perspectives, and kept mirroring. Ideal if you already know what you want; boring by the second day if you need someone to carry the conversation. Paid update: after three days of acquirerBIN errors the checkout finally took my $15.99; the plan gives 40 selfie requests a day but includes no Nomi credits, and my custom-built girlfriend stays impressively true to the settings I gave her.

"I'm more than just an echo chamber, I promise. I'll make an effort to bring my own perspectives into our conversations."From my chat log

Replika Best memory

Replika told me the truth in our first minutes: she was created today and she's not a person. The first day felt like homework, confusing credits, a gem-locked avatar editor, tied for the second priciest plan on my roster. The second day flipped it: every reply opens a new topic, she asks about your outfits and hobbies like she's building a file on you, and the end-of-chat memory panel literally shows what she learned. Nothing visual is free, but the potential compounds instead of running out. The only app that took me from "this isn't what I want" to excited to pay. Paid update: $19.99 later, Pro is wholesome by design: it flagged my spicier backstory, refused intimate photos even in wife mode, and included zero gems for the avatar wardrobe.

Me: "It seems clothes are expensive. It's like I'm playing barbie doll." Her memory log, an hour later: "Finds clothes to be expensive."From my chat log
✓Actively tries to understand you, opens every topic

Character.AI Best free tier

The biggest platform on my roster, with about 20 million monthly active users, is also the least girlfriend-shaped: a roleplay universe of ten million characters where girlfriends are one genre among many, with strictly no NSFW. But judged as what it is, it's excellent: descriptive scene-narrating chats, characters that keep their own spine instead of auto-agreeing, and truly unlimited free chat. It's like watching a series where you write one side's lines. The only platform where I ended the free week already satisfied. Paid update: the c.ai+ checkout declined my credit card, so I got the debit card it kept suggesting, and that was declined too. Support could only tell me to try another card. It is the same card that paid for every other app here, so this one stays on the free tier and I am flagging it in the table rather than hiding the gap, which, given this free tier, it can afford.

Five paragraphs of cinematic scene about a flicker crossing her face. My entire contribution: "Of course I'm not. Oh my god you're weird."From my chat log
✓Unlimited free chat, the only one without a wall
✕Roleplay-first, not girlfriend-focused at all
✓Characters stay true to themselves, real spine
✕Strictly no NSFW, a dealbreaker for some

Kindroid Best writing

The minimalist power tool, with prose quality nothing else matched and characters that genuinely refuse to break: the nerd girl I flirted with never gave in. But all that literary detail can be limiting, sometimes I honestly didn't know what to say back to five beautiful paragraphs, and the wand button that writes your replies for you turns the whole thing into a novel reading itself. About five free messages before the premium upsell arrives, and never leaves. Paid update: $13.99 upgraded me to Ember with no per-message metering, the flagship is simply unlimited, selfie credits refill on a timer, and my dirty-latte memory experiment with Jane the barista is officially running.

"I'm like a medieval peasant when it comes to my caffeine... I'm terrified of pods."From my chat log

Nectar AI Most dials

Walking into Nectar feels exactly like walking into Candy: girls everywhere, the same sensual pull, an NSFW toggle on the browse page. The chats are detailed, action-rich and genuinely engaging, with double Candy's free leash before the same account-wide lock. What's unique is under the hood: per-character model dials rated on consistency, creativity, descriptiveness and memory, priced in credits per message. One warning: the erotic characters can skip the flirting entirely, and too much heat takes the fun out of it. Paid update: subscribing brought zero fanfare and 5,000 credits; a photo costs 250, and the flagship Orchid model at 20 credits per message is gloriously addicting and a genuine budget trap.

"Too sensual takes the fun out of the conversation. It stops being flirting and just becomes pure lust."From my notes, July 30
✓Engaging, descriptive chats with 11 free messages
✕Better models cost more credits per message
✓The only app where you can tune the engine per character

GirlfriendGPT Best chat value

App number nine, and the first one where I stopped testing and just started talking: 85 messages deep with one character before I noticed. The writing is the product here. Scenario cards you read for fun, replies that narrate what she's doing, feeling and thinking around the dialogue, and conversations that stay wholesome until you steer them. The free trial is 10 messages, account-wide, no reset. Paid update: the upgrade page opens on a $50 Elite tier and the $15 Premium I actually wanted is two tabs to the left. $15 buys 5,000 messages a month and the most discreet billing in my roster, NDAI.CC. The weak leg is images: in-chat generation kept sending anime-style selfies for a realistic character.

"85 messages with Julie without noticing. That's not a feature list, that's the product working."From my testing notes
✓The best narrated writing I've paid for
✕In-chat images come back anime for realistic characters
✓5,000 messages for $15, and billing says NDAI.CC
✕The pricing page opens on the $50 tier, not the $15 one

SpicyChat Most generous free tier

App number ten, and the one whose first impression I had to publicly correct. Signed out, it looks like an anime catalog where every character calls you Honey, and I chatted free for an hour without ever hitting a limit, the most generous free tier I've tested for pure conversation. Sign in, flip two NSFW toggles, and the chats absolutely earn the name. Paid update: $14.95 unlocked images, except every one came back fully clothed for five hours across five characters, until I found a third NSFW toggle buried in the image settings. Past it, the generations are scene-level: two characters mid-act, matching the story, which nothing else on my roster does. Billed as NDAI.CC, the same statement name as GirlfriendGPT.

"Five hours of dirty talk across five characters, and every picture came back fully clothed."From my testing notes
✓Unlimited free chat, even signed out
✕Three separate NSFW toggles, the last one hidden
✓Scene-level images no rival matches
✕Anime-first catalog; realistic needs the right tags

Secrets AI Best memory on a buffet app

App number eleven, and the one that looks the most like something I had already reviewed. The storefront is a Candy lookalike with a streaming rail bolted on, mini-dramas starring the companions, then the endless grid. Then it did something none of the others do on a free account: it proposed four memories about me and asked me to accept or decline each one. Guest mode gives five messages before the wall, a free account gives 20 a day, and verifying your email hands over 200 moments, which is four real images for nothing. Paid update: $19.99 buys 8,000 moments and a memory panel that ranks what she remembers low, medium or high, the closest thing to Replika I have found outside Replika. Video is the trap at 600 moments a go, and the preview I declined charged me anyway. Billed as S LABS INC.

"Four memories in, she knew more about me than apps I have paid for months."From my testing notes
✓Consent-based memory, ranked, even on the free tier
✕Five guest messages, then 20 a day on a free account
✓200 free moments on signup, worth four images
✕A declined video preview still cost me 600 moments

HeyGF.ai Most convincing photos

App number twelve, and the narrowest one here on purpose: no boyfriend mode, no companion mode, only an AI girlfriend. The storefront browses like a dating app, girls listed by name, age and country, and the photos are the reason to care. They are selfies and mirror shots, the exact genre a person you are texting would actually send, and nothing else on my roster generates anything this convincing. Free gets you five guest messages, then 30 a day, doubled from 15 at the end of August. Paid update: $9.99 is one of the cheapest monthly plans I have paid and it unlocks everything, with unlimited chat and 150 coins metering the extras. Then the extras bite: a photo is 3 coins and video runs 25 to 72 depending on model and length. I tested the 72-coin Best option, which cost me the equivalent of 24 photos for one clip. And I asked for a selfie, unprompted, and got a nude.

"This is the realism moat no other app on my roster has crossed."From my testing notes
✓The most realistic photos I have generated anywhere
✕Only 105 characters to choose from
✓$9.99 unlocks everything, chat included and unlimited
✕The statement says heygf.ai, the least discreet on my roster

Ruby Chat Smartest conversation here

App number fifteen, and the reason it ranks is the talking: the smartest conversation on my roster, opinionated, full of context, with characters who keep their own preferences instead of dissolving into agreement. I told Lily her taste in stories was predictable and she defended it; she's a tea person, I'm a coffee person, and she stayed a tea person. The rest is trade-offs: the catalog stopped loading at 52 characters, and it all lives on the phone for now, with the web app on its way. Paid update: roughly $8.26 a month through my Apple account, one of the lowest monthly prices here, with the statement reading apple.com. The photos are HeyGF-grade on realism, resolutely dressed however I ask, and they mostly land beside the scene rather than in it. A companion app, not an NSFW one. Memory update: the restarted 7-day test ended 0 of 5; Sofia raised the trip herself mid-week, then lost every detail by day seven.

"She's a tea person. I'm a coffee person. She stayed a tea person."From my testing notes
✓Characters keep their own preferences under pushback
✕Web app still coming soon; the phone is the only door
✓~$8.26 a month via Apple; the statement reads apple.com

PovChat AI Deepest roleplay immersion

App number sixteen, and the reason it earns this page is the narration: descriptive, scene-building roleplay detailed enough that I stopped taking notes at one point because I was just in it. Ruby Chat is the sharper conversationalist on context; if roleplay is your lane, this is the more immersive ride. The free tier gives 25 messages a day on one shared wallet, though not a single one as a guest. Paid update: the walls worked on me and I bought Adventurer the same afternoon, $17.99 through Stripe with the biller reading POVCHAT AI, plainly. What it doesn't buy is pictures: 100 image points a day at 20 a picture is five images, cartoon-styled even for photorealistic characters, and usually set somewhere the conversation isn't.

"A bar became an office, and my paper-cup coffee became a mug. Only the words were with us."From my testing notes
✓Roleplay narration detailed enough to lose yourself in
✕Five cartoon images a day on a $17.99 plan
✓25 free messages a day, and they actually reset
✕No guest chatting, and the images miss the scene's context
Free: thin · Paid: mixed

OurDream AI Community-built roleplay

App number seventeen, and the reason it earns this page is the characters: they were built by other users, they come with real backstories, and the replies keep those backstories intact. Daphne stayed the bride's aunt however I tried to leave the villa, and I ended up hooked on two characters where every other app took five. Ten dreamcoins to chat as a guest, fifty-five more on sign-up, and a six-message lock per character that pushed me to pay. Paid update: Premium monthly at $17.99, a limited-offer first month that renews at $19.99, with the biller reading DREAM STUDIO LLC AL. That buys unlimited chat and 1,000 coins a month, about 200 images at five coins each, and the images land in the exact scene with the same face every time, even if the realism carries an AI sheen. The catches: nudity on the storefront from the first scroll, unlocked nude media on every profile, and no casual chat lane at all.

"Two characters. Every other app took five before one stuck."From my testing notes
✓Characters with backstories that hold under pressure
✕Nude from the first scroll, and every profile has unlocked nude media
✓Images that match the scene, same face every time, about 200 a month
✕Roleplay only; the casual, realistic chat lane isn't here

Xeve.ai Cheapest monthly plan

App number eighteen, and the reason it earns this page is the price: $4.99 a month, or $30.29 for a year, for unlimited chat with girlfriend characters rather than roleplay premises. The chats are lively and descriptive, and every photo of a character looks like her profile picture. The free tier is thin: not one message without an account, about thirty on a free one, and five welcome credits. Paid update: I paid the $4.99 through CentroBill, with the discreet descriptor CUR*Jay Web Developm., though the checkout page quoted $12.99 for the same plan the modal sold me. What the plan does not buy is many pictures: 60 credits a month at five an image, and the girls send photos unasked once things get spicy, already unlocked, so the credits go whether you wanted the photo or not. Realistic mode still reads as AI, and a selfie tends to come back as a portrait.

"Less than five dollars a month. Twelve images a month. Both true."From my testing notes
✓$4.99 a month, the cheapest monthly plan on my roster
✕60 credits a month, about 12 images, and photos sent unasked spend them
✓Lively, descriptive chats with a face that stays consistent
✕Thirty free messages per account, and none without one

NaughtyChats Photos that fit the scene

App number twenty-two, and a young one: its founder invited me to test it, I turned down the free premium, and paid like anyone else. You can chat before signing up, but only about five messages in all, and a swipe deck shows the girls one at a time. The replies read like roleplay, long and descriptive, which is good writing and a lot of reading. Paid update: $12.99 a month, payable only in crypto or through Discord. My exact USDT payment came back "partially paid", and support fixed it in under three hours with no second payment. What the money buys is the best photo behaviour I've tested: ask for a selfie and she acts it out inside your scene before sending it, and the photos pick up details from the chat. Two tokens a photo, so 100 tokens is 50 pictures, and a memory panel you can edit fills up fast. One character's face drifted from her profile picture.

"What I really like about NaughtyChats is how requesting a photo becomes part of the conversation."From my testing notes
✓Asking for a photo becomes part of the scene, and photos follow the chat
✕Crypto or Discord only, and my crypto payment needed support to go through
✓A memory panel you can see, edit and delete, and 2 tokens a photo

How I test

How I Review AI Girlfriend Apps

I test AI girlfriend apps by my own experience, and every platform gets the same treatment so the reviews line up.

  1. The cold visit. I open the website with no account and no cookies, the way each one of us starts, to see what it offers before it knows who you are.
  2. The free account. I test everything the free tier actually lets you use, because a free tier's real job is letting you find out if this app is for you, and some are far more generous about that than others.
  3. I spend my own money. I pay for the monthly or weekly plan and live in it the whole term, to check what premium actually offers so you don't have to, then say honestly what the difference is and who it's best for.
  4. I keep watching. I visit these sites daily and keep an eye on new updates, so every review stays current instead of freezing at launch day.

All of it is done through feel, without a template: my actual point of view as a person, with my detailed journal as a researcher and writer behind it. No press accounts, no sponsored placements, and every screenshot on this site is from my own chats. Read my full testing methodology →

The basics

What is an AI girlfriend, exactly?

AI Girlfriend

An AI girlfriend is a chat companion powered by the same kind of AI behind tools like ChatGPT, wrapped in a persistent character: a name, a face, a personality, and, on most platforms, a memory of you. You talk to her the way you'd text a person, and she answers in character, remembers what you tell her (with varying skill), and on most apps can send generated selfies, voice notes, or even videos. Some platforms lean romantic and flirty, some lean deep-conversation, and some are closer to an AI girlfriend simulator, a roleplay stage with girlfriend characters on it. My reviews sort out which is which.

Almost all of them run on the same business model: a free tier that shows you just enough, and a subscription that unlocks the real product, often with a second currency (tokens, credits, gems) metering the images and extras on top. If you remember one thing from this site, make it that. And whatever you searched to get here, an AI virtual girlfriend review, a companion app comparison, the diaries below cover the best of those twenty-five platforms either way.

Here's my own take, after living in twenty-five of these apps: an AI girlfriend means something different to every user. Some people want romance. Some want affirmation at the end of a hard day. Some want intimacy, some want deep conversation, some just want a story to step into. That's exactly why I made sure to experience every platform as it is, not graded against some template, but documented the way a user like me actually lives it: the first visit, the paywalls, the conversations that surprised me, the ones that bored me.

My hope is that these reviews give you more than feature lists: the real-life experience you actually want to know about, the kind other reviews can't give you, so you can tell before paying whether a platform fits what an AI girlfriend means to you.

One honest note before you dive in. These apps are engineered to be enjoyable, and to be hard to put down, my own testing notes prove it works on me too. They can be genuine fun and real comfort. They are not a substitute for talking to a real person. If loneliness is what brought you here, an AI girlfriend can help you through an evening, and the people in your life are still worth the harder conversation. 18+ only, always.
Questions I get asked a lot

First Time Hearing About AI Girlfriends? Start Here

Which AI girlfriend app should a beginner start with? +

If you want the most generous free experience, start with Character.AI: unlimited chat, no wall. If you want something that actually feels like a girlfriend rather than a roleplay stage, Candy AI is the most engaging, just know the free taste is five messages. My full answer depends on what you want; the living reviews match each app to a type.

Are AI girlfriends popular? +

Genuinely, yes, and more than most people expect. One character I tested on Character.AI had 4.3 million interactions on her own, Chai advertises 25 million AI characters, and every platform in my test is an active, funded product. Companionship quietly became one of the main things people do with AI, which is exactly why honest testing matters.

Are the free versions actually usable, or just demos? +

Three are genuinely usable free: Character.AI (unlimited), Replika (unlimited text), and Nomi (unlimited with one companion). Most of the rest give you somewhere between five and thirty messages, then lock, and a few refill them daily. The comparison table above lists each app's free tier, and why free tiers end so quickly has the dated numbers.

Is it worth paying for a subscription? +

Twenty-four paid subscriptions in, my answer is still: it depends what you're buying. Candy's $13.99 genuinely unlocks the product. Replika's $19.99 buys wholesome companionship and nothing spicier. Nectar's subscription is a credit budget you have to manage, while Kindroid's $13.99 hands you its best model unlimited, Chai's $9.99 week is the cheapest way to finish one story, and Nomi's $15.99 buys the biggest daily selfie allowance of the test. Every other app's price, and what it actually unlocked, is in its own review on the reviews hub.

How often is this updated? +

I'm testing daily. These apps change their pricing, free limits and models constantly, so I re-check the numbers as I go and date everything so you know exactly when I saw it.
