People ask me which AI girlfriend app is the biggest all the time. It sounds like a one-line answer. It isn't, because no two companies count their users the same way.

The short answer: Replika has the largest user count any single app publishes, 42.16 million users worldwide, but that counts everyone who ever signed up. For people using an app every month, Character.AI (20 million+) and MiniMax's Talkie and Xingye (20.05 million, combined) lead. Among apps built mainly for romance, Janitor AI is the biggest with a published number: 15 million+ total users and 2.5 million a day.

Here's the problem. Replika shows a live counter of everyone who ever signed up. Character.AI reports monthly active users. CHAI counts anyone who logged in during the past year. Candy AI, CrushOn and SpicyChat publish nothing at all, so all you'll find for them is website traffic. Ten million visits isn't ten million people, and ten million sign-ups isn't ten million people still chatting.

So this isn't a single top-10 list. I collected every user figure the companies themselves have put on the record, then grouped them by what they actually measure. Every number below names its metric, its date and where it came from. Where an app has no public number, I say so instead of guessing.

AI Girlfriend App Users: Editor’s Choice

  • →Replika’s homepage counter read 42,160,934 users on October 12, 2026, the biggest number any single app shows. (Replika)
  • →Talkie and Xingye reached 147.1 million cumulative users by September 2025, with 20.05 million active a month. (MiniMax prospectus)
  • →Character.AI reports 20 million+ monthly active users, the largest monthly figure for one platform. (Character.AI)
  • →Janitor AI has 2.5 million daily users, and claims 15 million+ in total. (Forbes)
  • →CHAI has 1 million+ daily users and 10 million+ who logged in during the past year. (CHAI)
  • →Candy AI, CrushOn, SpicyChat and OurDream publish no user count, even though all four appeared in a16z’s list of the 100 most-visited AI websites. (a16z)
  • →Across the whole category, companion apps passed 220 million downloads by July 2025. (Appfigures)

Top AI girlfriend apps by number of users

These are the platforms whose companies have published a user number, ordered by the size of that number. Read the metric column before the figure column. A cumulative count and a monthly count are different questions, so this order tells you who has published the biggest number, not who has the most people chatting today.

1. Talkie and Xingye reached 147.1 million cumulative users by September 30, 2025.

MiniMax listing prospectus (HKEX)

The biggest number on this page, and the most rigorously reported, because it comes from a stock-exchange filing. Two catches. It combines Talkie (the global app) and Xingye (its Chinese sister app), and MiniMax never splits them. And it counts new registrations plus newly activated devices, so one person on two phones counts twice. Neither app is built only for romance, but both are full of romantic characters.

2. Replika’s homepage shows 42,160,934 users worldwide.

Replika (live counter, read October 12, 2026)

The largest number any single app puts on its own front page. Replika’s May 2026 manifesto says the same thing in words: over 40 million. It’s a running total of sign-ups since 2017, though, not a count of people talking to a Replika this month. I break that gap down in my Replika user statistics.

3. Character.AI supports over 20 million monthly active users.

Character.AI engineering blog, February 2025

The company first said 20 million in October 2024 and repeated it in a February 2025 blog post. It hasn’t published a newer number since, including after it closed open-ended chat to under-18s in November 2025. So treat this as the last official figure, not today’s. My Character.AI statistics cover the traffic and download side.

4. Janitor AI says it has more than 15 million total users.

Janitor AI, as reported by Forbes, May 7, 2026

Janitor AI is the biggest romance-first platform with a public number. Forbes called it the biggest AI romantic fantasy site for women, which puts its traffic at 100 million monthly visitors, and Similarweb ranks it the tenth most popular consumer AI app. That makes it unusual in a category most people picture as male.

5. Over 10 million people logged in to CHAI in the 12 months to October 1, 2026.

CHAI company facts page

CHAI is the only company here that defines its number in plain words on the page. A year-long window is generous compared with monthly active users, but it’s honest about what it is. The same page puts CHAI’s revenue run-rate at $120 million a year.

6. More than a million people have tried a Nomi relationship, the company says.

Nomi, as reported by the Baltimore Banner, February 2026

Nomi’s own messaging doesn’t agree with itself. Its homepage says “hundreds of thousands” love their Nomis, and a June 2025 update said its old model served “millions of users.” “Tried” is the loosest metric on this page, but it’s the most recent number the company put on the record.

7. Over half a million people had tried Kindroid by March 2024.

ElevenLabs case study (Kindroid)

The only user figure Kindroid has given, and it’s more than two years old. Its homepage now says 4 million+ downloads, which suggests the app has grown a lot since. But downloads aren’t users, so the half-million stays in the table as the last real user number.

Which AI girlfriend app has the most active users?

Cumulative totals only ever go up. The more useful question is how many people show up in a given month or on a given day. Fewer companies answer that one.

Up from 2.9 million in 2023 and 14.7 million in 2024, the fastest growth of any companion product with numbers in a public filing. MiniMax’s later annual and half-year results stopped giving app-level active users, so this is the last official look.

9. Janitor AI has 2.5 million daily users.

Forbes, May 7, 2026

The biggest daily number any romance-first platform has published, and two and a half times CHAI’s. A daily count is the hardest one to inflate, because people have to keep coming back.

10. CHAI has over 1 million daily users.

CHAI company facts page, October 2026

Set that against the 10 million who logged in at least once in the year, and roughly one in ten of CHAI’s yearly users is there on any given day. That ratio is the closest thing to a loyalty number any of these companies publishes.

11. Replika had 2 million active users and 500,000 paying subscribers in 2023.

Replika, as reported by Fortune, July 2023

Replika’s most recent active number, and it’s three years old. Against 42 million sign-ups it shows how far a cumulative counter can drift from daily reality. That’s not a knock on Replika. Every app in this table would show the same gap if it published both numbers.

12. Talkie and Xingye had 1.39 million paying users in the first nine months of 2025.

MiniMax listing prospectus

Over nine months, that's equal to about 7% of its average monthly audience paying at least once. Most people in these apps never pay, which I can confirm from the other side of the paywall: the free tiers are built to be enough for a lot of people.

Popular AI girlfriend apps without public user counts

Some of the apps people search for most have never published a user number. Some of them clearly have big audiences. The best independent evidence is a16z’s Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps report, which ranks AI websites by unique monthly visitors (Similarweb) and mobile apps by monthly active users (Sensor Tower). It shows who’s big. It doesn’t show how big.

13. Seven companion platforms made a16z’s top 100 AI websites in March 2026: Candy, Character.ai, CrushOn, Janitor AI, OurDream, PolyBuzz and SpicyChat.

a16z Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps, 6th edition (January 2026 data)

For a category that publishes almost nothing, this is the clearest outside proof of scale. Being on the list means millions of unique visitors a month. It doesn’t give an exact count, so none of these apps get a number in my ranking table.

14. Apps built mainly for NSFW use would have made up more than 20% of a16z’s top 100 AI websites in October 2026.

a16z Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps, 7th edition (August 2026 data)

The October 2026 edition left those products out, which is why Candy, CrushOn, Janitor AI, SpicyChat and OurDream vanished from it. They didn’t lose their traffic. a16z changed the rules. So if you see one of these apps “drop off” the 2026 rankings, that’s why.

15. Grok has about 117 million monthly active users, but nobody knows how many use its companions.

SpaceX filing, as reported by Social Media Today, May 2026

xAI added companion characters, including the anime girlfriend Ani, to Grok in July 2025. That probably makes Grok the biggest AI girlfriend feature on the planet. There’s no companion-only number, though, and 117 million general chatbot users can’t stand in for one, so Grok stays out of the ranking.

How big is the whole category?

16. AI companion apps passed 220 million downloads worldwide by July 2025.

Appfigures, via TechCrunch, August 2025

Across 337 apps that earn money, with $221 million in lifetime consumer spending and 60 million downloads in the first half of 2025 alone. One person can install several apps, so this isn’t 220 million people. And it misses web-only platforms like Candy and CrushOn entirely. It’s still the best category-wide number there is. The rest of the market data is in my AI companion statistics.

How I collected the numbers

I’ve paid for most of the apps on this page, but a subscription tells you nothing about how many other people are paying. So this page is pure desk research, and I held it to a few rules:

Only company numbers rank. A figure enters the two ranking tables only if the company published it on its own site, in a filing, or on the record to a named news outlet. Analytics estimates and traffic go in the no-count section as evidence.

Visits never become users. I didn’t divide website visits by a guessed visits-per-person number. It would produce a tidy ranking that looks precise and isn’t.

Every metric gets named. The five you’ll meet in this niche, from loosest to strictest: downloads or installs (a device fetched the app), website visits (sessions, not people), cumulative users (everyone who ever signed up), monthly active users (people who used it in a given month), and daily active users (people who used it on a given day).

Some popular numbers didn’t make it. A widely quoted 22.4 million monthly visits for CrushOn, which I couldn’t trace to any source. A “50 million users” claim for Candy AI that appears only in recruiting copy I couldn’t open. The 28 million “peak” and 45 million “active” figures for Character.AI, which come from stat aggregators, not the company. And a 1 million monthly-user figure for Joi AI that the company itself declined to give.

If you run one of these apps and want an exact, defined number on this page, email me at ranji@aigirlfriend.coach. I’ll add it with your name on it.

Beyond the numbers

The biggest app isn’t automatically the best one for you.

A user count tells you where the crowd is. It says nothing about memory, pricing traps or how the app treats you after you pay. That’s what I test, one subscription at a time, in my living reviews.

Conclusion

So which AI girlfriend app has the most users? By the numbers companies actually publish: Talkie and Xingye have the biggest cumulative total, 147.1 million. Replika has the biggest for a single app, 42.16 million. Character.AI and Talkie plus Xingye share the lead for monthly users at around 20 million each. And among apps built mainly for romance, Janitor AI leads with 2.5 million people a day.

My honest read: the most popular dedicated AI girlfriend apps, Candy, CrushOn, SpicyChat and OurDream, are also the quietest about their numbers. They’re big enough for a16z’s top 100 list, but none of them will say how big. Until they do, any article giving you an exact number for them is giving you a guess. I’ll update this page as companies publish new figures.

FAQs

Which AI girlfriend app has the most users?

It depends on what you count. The largest published figure belongs to MiniMax's Talkie and Xingye, with 147.1 million cumulative users by September 2025. Among single apps, Replika's homepage counter shows 42.16 million users worldwide. For monthly active users, Character.AI (20 million+) and Talkie plus Xingye (20.05 million) lead.

Which AI girlfriend app has the most active users?

Character.AI reports more than 20 million monthly active users, and MiniMax reported an average of 20.05 million for Talkie and Xingye combined in the first nine months of 2025. Among apps built mainly for romance, Janitor AI says it has 2.5 million daily users, the largest daily figure any of these apps has published.

How many users does Replika have?

Replika's homepage showed 42,160,934 users worldwide on October 12, 2026. That counts everyone who ever signed up, not people using it today. The last active figure the company gave was 2 million active users and 500,000 paying subscribers, in July 2023.

How many users do Candy AI, Kindroid and Nomi have?

None of them publishes a current, defined user count. Nomi told the Baltimore Banner in February 2026 that more than a million people have tried it. Kindroid's homepage says 4 million+ downloads. Candy AI publishes nothing, though it appears in a16z's lists of the most-visited AI websites.

How many people use AI companion apps in total?

Appfigures counted 220 million downloads of AI companion apps worldwide by July 2025, across 337 apps that earn revenue, with $221 million in lifetime consumer spending. Downloads are not people, since one person can install several apps, but it is the best category-wide number available.
